ORIGAMI :
from "ori" meaning "folding" and "kami" meaning "paper". This traditional Japanese Art of paper folding started in the 17th century AD and was popular worldwide besides Japan in the 1900s.
The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper through folding techniques to a sculpture.In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper,whose sides may be of different colors or prints.It is commonly colored on one side and white on the other.
Origami paper is sold in various sizes from one inch (2.5cm x 2.5cm) to ten inches (25cm x 25cm) or more.Normal copy paper can be used for simple folds.Paper money from various countries is also popular to create origami.The number of basic origami folds is small,but they can be combined to make intricate designs.There are many types of origami. The most popular are:The traditional Origami ,which has evolved since the Edo period (1603-1867).The best- known origami model is probably the Japanese paper crane.This is a traditional Japanese origami. Many books begin with a description of basic origami techniques and include simple diagrams, which are used to construct the models.The practice and study of origami have mathematical and geometrical interest. A number of technological advances have been obtained through paper folding ,for example, the refolding of car airbags.

Τις παλιές εκείνες εποχές που διπλώναμε σαΐτες και χάρτινα καραβάκια
μαζί με άλλους τετράχρονους καλλιτέχνες στο νηπιαγωγείο, δεν
φανταζόμασταν ότι αυτό που κάνουμε είναι μια πανάρχαια μορφή τέχνης. Δεν
ξέραμε, ας πούμε, ότι οι ρίζες της χάνονται στα βάθη της Ασίας, και
εντοπίζονται στην Ιαπωνία της δυναστείας Edo του 6ου αιώνα.
Το
origami, που σημαίνει στα ιαπωνικά «χαρτοδίπλωμα» από τις λέξεις ori
(δίπλωμα) και kami (χαρτί) είναι η τέχνη του να φτιάχνεις σχήματα,
σχέδια, ζώα, στολίδια, σπίτια, αντικείμενα και οτιδήποτε άλλο σου
κατέβει στο μυαλό από ένα οποιοδήποτε, τυχαίο, τετράγωνο κομμάτι χαρτί.
Προσοχή, όμως: δεν μπορείς να κόψεις ούτε να κολλήσεις οποιοδήποτε
σημείο του χαρτιού, σε κανένα στάδιο της κατασκευής. Το origami γίνεται
με το χαρτί ως μοναδικό υλικό, και τα χέρια ως μοναδικό εργαλείο –αλλιώς
είναι kirigami, και αποτελεί ένα άλλο, ολόκληρο κεφάλαιο της χειροτεχνίας.
